How Do I Pray?

One Sunday night while we were still dating before getting married, my (now) wife Rachel needed to pray for a friend of hers. Her friend was having some personal issues and Rachel told me she didn’t know what to do. I told her, ‘there’s nothing you can do. You can’t fix her problem. All you can do is pray to Jesus and let Him help her. He’s the only one that can fix us anyway.”

Monday morning, she text messaged me, “Teach me to pray.”

The disciples once asked Jesus, “Lord, show us how to pray.” And He did. I didn’t think I could improve on what the Lord taught, so I directed her to read what Jesus said in Matthew 6:9-13:

Why Does God Appear to Hide Himself?

When a Russian cosmonaut returned from space and reported that he had not found God, C.S. Lewis responded that this was like Hamlet going into the attic of his castle looking for Shakespeare. If there is a God, He wouldn’t be another object in the universe that could be put in a lab and analyzed with empirical methods.

Am I Really Self-Righteous?

This is an interesting question in that I can think of 3 different scenarios where one’s family or friends might tell someone that that person thinks they are better than everyone else. The three scenes that immediately come to my mind are these:

  • One actually believes they are better than everyone else, this is usually someone that is legalistic about their faith and likes to point out to everyone what they are doing wrong and someone correctly points that out, or,
  • Other people incorrectly think someone thinks they are better than everyone else because of their preconceived notions of what a Christian is, or,
  • The ones doing the accusing are feeling convicted of their own actions and resent that your life’s example is pointing that out, whether directly or indirectly. […]

Choosing The Lesser of Two Evils?

I hear this statement, that we’re being forced to choose between the lesser of two evils, I understand that within the political realm, someone is trying to define their opponent or give one a reason as to why they’re going to vote the way they are to not offend someone. However, the problem here is anytime you have to choose between people, you’re going to be choosing between less than morally perfect people. The Bible is very clear about this. King Solomon writes in Ecclesiastes 7:20; Surely, there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins. The Apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the Romans that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God! Through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord says […]

How Do I Hear the Voice of God?

That is an excellent question and one that i’m sure many of us, including myself, have asked throughout the ages. When we are listening for God’s voice, how can we know that He is the one speaking?

In the Old Testament is the story about a man named Gideon. Gideon had a physical revelation from God. But he, like you, wasn’t sure if he was actually hearing God speaking to him or if it was his own fleshly desires so he requested proof of God’s will by three miracles. The first sign was having the Angel of the Lord, appear to Gideon and cause fire to shoot up out of a rock and then two signs involving a fleece, performed on consecutive nights with opposite results […]
